Keel-billed Motmot
Electron carinatum
This enigmatic and secretive bird is listed as uncommon to fairly common in Belize. Motmots as a family are often hard to spot because they will sit still and not move much.. The species is found in undisturbed braodleaf forest. Most sites associated with steep rocky slopes, often unrestored Mayan temple mounds. Most reports are south the Western Highway and Hummingbird Highway.
Sites for this species include Caracol and Mayflower-Bocawina National Park. There are reports from Billy Barquedier National Park.
Most easily located by call. Calls most at dawn, but perhaps later in cloudy days.
